What is fragrance load?

Fragrance load — also called fragrance percentage or scent load — is the weight of fragrance oil expressed as a percentage of the wax weight. It is always measured by weight, not by volume, because fragrance oil density varies.

Formula: Fragrance oil (oz) = Wax weight (oz) × (Fragrance % ÷ 100)

What happens if you add too much fragrance oil?

Exceeding a wax's maximum fragrance load causes:

  • Seeping — fragrance oil pools on the surface or leaks from the jar
  • Wet spots — adhesion failures between wax and glass
  • Poor hot throw — excess oil does not bind to the wax properly
  • Fire hazard — fragrance oil that has not bonded to wax is flammable

Measuring fragrance oil accurately

Always use a digital scale accurate to 0.1 g (0.01 oz). Never measure fragrance oil by volume using measuring cups — different oils have different densities and the volume measurement will be wrong. The Candle Cost Calculator can help you price your fragrance oil cost per batch once you have your formula set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Start at 8% for Golden 464 and most container soy waxes. Do a burn test before committing to a full batch. If hot throw is weak, increase to 9–10% — but do not exceed the wax manufacturer's maximum without re-testing.
Yes, slightly. Higher fragrance loads can slow burn time marginally because the oil adds weight and slightly changes the wax's burn characteristics. The Burn Time Estimator accounts for this.
Yes — use the Fragrance Blend Calculator to combine up to 5 oils into a custom blend. The combined weight is what goes into this calculator as your total fragrance amount.
Most soy waxes: add fragrance at 185°F (85°C) and stir for 2 full minutes. See the Pour Temperature Guide for exact temperatures by wax type.
